Analysis of the Advantages and Disadvantages of Rigid Couplings

Time : 2019-03-15    Browse : 10

As a component that connects two shafts in mechanical transmission, the advantages and disadvantages of rigid couplings are closely related to the application scenarios, as follows:

I. Advantages

  • Structure and Cost Advantages

The rigid coupling has a simple structure and consists of two half-couplings, which are connected to the two shafts through keys to transmit torque and motion. It is easy to manufacture, low cost, and easy to maintain and disassemble.

  • Outstanding Transmission Performance

It can transmit large torque. Under the condition of stable load and high centering accuracy of the two shafts, it can ensure high transmission efficiency and transmission accuracy. It is suitable for scenes with low speed, no impact and high rigidity of the shaft.

  • Centering Accuracy Guarantee

Taking the flange coupling as an example, through reasonable design, it can ensure that the two shafts have high centering accuracy and can perform stably when the working conditions are stable.

II. Disadvantages

  • Strict Centering Requirements

This is the main disadvantage of the rigid coupling. It has extremely high requirements for the centering of the two shafts. When there is relative displacement between the two shafts, additional loads will be generated inside the machine, resulting in deterioration of the working conditions, thereby reducing the service life, transmission accuracy and efficiency of the coupling, and causing vibration and noise.

  • Lack of Compensation Ability

It does not have axial, radial and angular compensation performance, and cannot adapt to the relative offset between the two shafts. If the centering accuracy is insufficient during installation, it is very easy to cause failure.

  • Limited Scope of Application

It is only applicable to occasions where the load is stable, there is no impact, and the centering performance of the two shafts is strictly guaranteed. It is not applicable to working conditions with impact, vibration or shaft system prone to offset.

In summary, rigid couplings have advantages in structure, cost and torque transmission, but the high centering requirements limit its application scope. When choosing, it is necessary to weigh and consider the specific working conditions.
